CE Wales Awards for two EVY Projects

Last Friday evening I was a guest of Hewson Consulting Engineers at the ICE Wales Cymru Awards in Cardiff and I am delighted to report that two of Edenvale Young's projects picked up awards in both classes. Edenvale Young provided hydraulic modelling services for both projects which had significantly different challenges. These were:

  • Rhiwbina Flood Alleviation Scheme was given the Roy Edwards award which is aimed at smaller projects

  • The Pont Briwet Bridge Transport Improvement Project was given the George Gibby Special Award for Innovation

Our involvement with the Rhiwbina project dates back to 2008 when we undertook the Flooding Project Appraisal Study for Cardiff City Council. Following completion of this study, Edenvale Young worked closely wih Mott MacDonald during the design phase to ensure that appropriate engineering options were brought forward to give a consistent standard of flood alleviation throughout the length of the scheme. This included removal of channel constrictions, installation of river restoration measures, defence improvements and attenuation features.

For the Rhiwbina Flood Alleviaion Scheme the judges commented on the sensitive environmental considerations associate with the use of soft engineering. Construction was completed in 2015. A big thank you to out to Cardiff City Council, Mott MacDonald and Raymond Brown Construction for the Rhiwbina Flood Alleviation Scheme.

For Pont Briwet (pictured above), Edenvale Young undertook a wide range of services which included:

  • Hydraulic modelling to assess flood risk and geomorphological modelling both using TUFLOW FV in the temporary and permanent works condition;
  • Geomorphological and water quality monitoring during construction;

  • Design of scour protection under the bridge and the design of rock armour for the approach embankments.

Construction works were also completed in 2015. For the Pont Briwet project the judges noted that the rock armour was totally in sympathy with the marine environment. A big thanks to the efforts of the entire delivery team for Pont Briwet including: Geynnyd County Council, Network Rail, Hochtief UK, Hewson Consulting, Beasley Sharp Railwise, the Stillwell Partnership and, not forgetting our team at Edenvale Young. Edenvale Young's initial appointment was in 2012 when we undertook pre tender 3D modelling for Gwynned Council.

I would particularly like to thank present and former members of Edenvale Young who worked hard on the hydraulic modelling, geomorphological modelling, detailed design and construction monitoring for both projects including:

  • Alex Attwood, Andy Gilbert, Chris Easterbrook, Claire Wasiak, Dan Boulden, Emily Webb, Emilie Graille, Francisco De Rus, Gerald Morgan, Ioanna Stamataki, Jono Burnett, Pavel Diptan, Peter Aylett, Maria Jarquin and Sally Hatton
